The collect and readings - as well as the Bishop's sermon, video and other resources - for the Twenty-Third Sunday after Trinity (19 November A.D. 2017).

The Collect

O God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness: Be ready, we beseech thee, to hear the devout prayers of thy Church; and grant that those things which we ask faithfully we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Philippians 3:17-21

Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Psalm 24:7-10

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; / and the King of glory shall come in.

Who is the King of glory? / it is the LORD strong and mighty, even the LORD mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; / and the King of glory shall come in. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Who is the King of glory? / even the LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Alleluia!

Matthew 22:15–22

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle [Jesus] in his words. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. (ESV)
